The large-scale armed aggression of Russia against Ukraine has caused an unprecedented growth in the country’s veteran community in recent history. Such demographic shifts require corresponding changes in state policy aimed at physical recovery, psycho-emotional stabilization, and social adaptation of former military personnel to civilian life conditions. However, there is a lack of comprehensive analysis of the trajectory of Ukrainian veterans’ engagement in adaptive sports: the moment and context of first contact with sports activity, the hierarchy of motivational factors, and the desired organizational model of support. Materials and methods. The empirical basis of the study consists of the results of an online survey of 112 veterans of the Russian-Ukrainian war, conducted by the National University of Physical Education and Sports of Ukraine in 2025–2026. The toolkit included 14 structured questions with closed-ended answers, multiple choice, and elements of open-ended comments. The following methods were used: analysis of scientific literature; the inductive method; synthesis and generalization; methods of mathematical statistics (descriptive statistics – frequencies, percentage distributions). Results. To study the experience of veterans’ engagement in adaptive sports, respondents’ answers were analyzed regarding their understanding of the concept of “adaptive sport”; veterans’ prior sports experience; the periods of engagement in adaptive sports activities; sources of motivation; the choice of sports programs known to veterans and desired for participation; prospective opportunities that open up after engagement in adaptive sports; and the involvement of family members in such activities. Conclusions. The analysis of veterans’ experience of engagement in adaptive sports demonstrated both the significant internal potential of the veteran community – motivational, human-resource, and organizational – and systemic barriers: terminological inconsistency, a gap between medical rehabilitation and sports-based recovery, a shortage of qualified specialists, and limited access to information. Overcoming these barriers requires a targeted state policy built on the “peer-to-peer” model, along with infrastructure supported by human and informational resources. The veteran community represents a unique human capital that the state and civil society must support, including through engagement in adaptive sports
